Dear Friends:

I am excited to tell you about a new component of the Charleston Antiques Symposium, an annual event sponsored by the College of Charleston’s School of the Arts. Now in its fifth year, the Symposium will include a day of three sessions in private homes on Kiawah! This is the first time we have developed a satellite component of the Symposium; the event will take place on March 13, 2002.

Our speakers will be presenting fascinating lectures about the decorative arts. We will start at 1:30 in the afternoon with Jan Goin’s session entitled “Appraising Paintings.” Jan is a noted appraiser from Charleston, and she has appraised works for several individuals and organizations. I am sure that you will be intrigued and learn quite a bit during her session.

Our second session will feature George Williams, and it will begin at 3:30 in the afternoon. George is one of the experts at Estate Antiques, and he is extremely knowledgeable about Southern decorative arts and related topics. He has spoken at many notable gatherings, and you will be in for a treat when you hear this rising star speak!

We will finish the day with a session starting at 5:30 in the afternoon. The session will focus on issues related to estate planning and the decorative arts, and the speaker will be an expert from the banking industry. After the session, we will finish the day with a wine reception.

Our hosts will be Mr. and Mrs. Richards Roddey, Dr. and Mrs. Robert Fenning, and Mr. and Mrs. Bill Baker. On behalf of the Charleston Antiques Symposium Committee, I thank them for opening their homes to us for this interesting day of study. I also thank Mary Quinto Johnson and Ruth Baker for developing the committee that has made this event possible.

Admission for this special series is available by individual session or at an attractive package rate. Please refer to the enclosed registration form for more details. Seating is limited, so you should send in your registration form soon. Information about the Charleston Antiques Symposium sessions at the School of the Arts is included in this packet as well, and I hope that you will plan to join us for the full Symposium.

Remember that proceeds from the Charleston Antiques Symposium support the School of the Arts and its programs. If you have any questions about the 2002 Symposium, please telephone Michael W. Haga at 843.953.7766 or send an e-mail message to him at HAGAM@COFC.EDU. I look forward to seeing you!

Sincerely,

Jean Y. Helms, Chair
Charleston Antiques Symposium Committee
