Message from Dean Valerie B. Morris
The School of the Arts celebrates its 20th anniversary this academic year! In twenty years, we have grown from a Fine Arts Department to a School consisting of six academic departments and programs. We have offered a wide range of courses and educational opportunities, including travel abroad experiences at our campus in Trujillo, Spain. Our exceptionally talented students, alumni, faculty, and staff have won major research grants, competitions, and other awards.
The School has established several music series including the Monday Night Concert Series, the International Piano Series (also celebrating its 20th anniversary), Charleston Music Fest; a vigorous theatre season; the Addlestone and Simons lectures in Art History and Historic Preservation; and unique gallery exhibitions in the Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art.
Our facilities have expanded with a new building, The Marion and Wayland H. Cato Jr. Center for the Arts. The highly successful grand opening of the Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art, on the first floor of the new building, was the kick-off 20th anniversary celebration in October 2009.
The grand opening of the new building in its entirety takes place on Saturday, January 9, 2010. Mark your calendars, and join us for sweet treats and entertainment while exploring all five floors. Renovations of our original building, the Simons Center for the Arts, will be the next step to upgrading our facilities.
The next few years of growth and development are extremely important for the School of the Arts. We want you to join us as students, friends, audience members, donors, supporters and lovers of the Arts!
Valerie B. Morris, Dean
