The Mural Project
The Mural Project, a 2003 Maymester course, was inspired by Michael Tyzack’s participation in the 2002 Piccolo Spoleto Festival exhibit, “Larger Than Life: A Second Story Show.” For the Mural Project, twelve students created mural-sized paintings which have been mounted to the outside of the Simons Center and the Sottile Theatre. The students created detailed maquettes of works that they enlarged and developed on a grand scale. They worked on the final canvases in studios, working with extension poles, tall ladders and gallons of paint. The maquettes and other preliminary work were presented in the first exhibit of the fall semester in the first floor Student Gallery of the Albert Simons Center for the Arts.
